It really is the end of an era at Real Madrid.
For the best part of a decade, three quarters of their defensive line has been made up with Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and impending Manchester United signing Raphael Varane.
Ramos has already rubber-stamped a move to France with Paris Saint-Germain, while Varane is set to follow Jadon Sancho through the Old Trafford doors.
Such is his standing with the La Liga giants, the 28-year-old will leave with three league titles and four Champions Leagues tow – plus that dream World Cup medal with France.
Now that experience and success comes as gold dust to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he continues build a United squad capable of challenging for the Premier League once again.
However, over in the Spanish capital, the impact of those high-profile losses is bound to be felt.
Marcelo is the last man, or defender, standing at Real and the Brazilian has even been appointed captain following the departure of Ramos. It’s thought that particular honour might have been offered to Varane as a sweetener in an attempt to see him remain in Madrid.
The bright lights of Old Trafford came calling, though, and United have their partner for Harry Maguire.
Posting a message about the Premier League newcomer on his Instagram profile, Marcelo said: “I’m going to miss you Rapha. I can only thank you for so many moments and successes by your side friend.
“I wish you the best in the new stage. You are great Rapha.”
