Newcastle have moved into pole position to secure the services of Axel Tuanzebe from Manchester United on a season-long loan deal.
Tuanzebe, 23, only played 18 times for United in 2020-21 and three of his four Premier League starts were in May.
The Manchester Evening News understands Tuanzebe feels he deserved more chances last season and received a lack of recognition.
Tuanzebe earned widespread acclaim last October for his performance in United’s Champions League group stage win at Paris Saint-Germain in what was his first start for a year, but he lined up in just eight more matches throughout the season.

The defender’s preferred position is at right centre-back but United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has previously favoured Victor Lindelof as Harry Maguire’s partner.
United though are now expected to complete the signing of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, after they confirmed that a deal in principle has been agreed with the La Liga club.
ChronicleLive report Newcastle are leading the race to sign Tuanzebe and the player and his camp have been ‘delighted’ by the club’s interest.
Should the youngster make a move to Newcastle, it would not be the first time that Tuanzebe has worked with manager Steve Bruce.
Bruce signed Tuanzebe in back-to-back seasons while at the helm of Aston Villa while they were in the Championship.
Villa have also been linked with the player who helped them earn promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2019.
