An enormous Indian food challenge which has caught the imagination of Greater Manchester has finally been defeated.
Lily’s Indian Vegetarian Cuisine, in Ashton-under-Lyne, launched the Grand Thali challenge last month.
For £35, the Tameside restaurant serves up 7kg of food on a huge 24-inch thali – including curries, daals, samosas, chaats, breads, desserts and two lassi drinks – to be eaten in just one hour.

None of the contestants had been able to overcome the feat until Sunday (August 8), when YouTuber Kyle Gibson mopped up the lot with 19 minutes to spare.

The 23-year-old, who runs the KyleVfood channels on social media, said: “To be honest it wasn’t that bad.
“You’ve got so many different textures and flavours and it makes for an easier challenge than having so much of the same thing.
“It’s a lot of food, don’t get me wrong, but there are so many different tastes it makes it a bit easier.

“There was no point where I thought that I wasn’t going to be able to do it – and now I can say I am the first person to have done it.”
Kyle, from near Sunderland, began tackling food challenges five years ago when he took on five litres of ice cream at a food festival.
He has since been able to make a living on social media, where he has taken on a host of gigantic food conquests.

“I’ve been all over the UK eating ridiculous amounts of food,” said Kyle.
“I have done some bigger challenges before, but taste-wise it was probably one of the best, and it was the first vegetarian challenge I have done.
“I’m a full-on meat eater, I couldn’t go vegetarian, but I would definitely go there again for food.”
The Grand Thali challenge at Lily’s comes to an end this week.
