Stockport has gone back in time to the 1830s as filming on a new show depicting early Victorian London took place earlier this week.
Described as a ‘fast-paced comedy drama’, BBC’s The Dodger is set before the events of Charles Dickens’ iconic novel Oliver Twist.
The series will star Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston in the role of Fagin while Shameless actor David Threlfall will play Sir Charles Rowan, the Chief of Police.

The family drama will also feature Billy Jenkins, Saira Choudhry, Ellie-May Sheridan, Connor Curren, Mila Lieu, and Sam C Wilson.
Filming for the series, which is being produced by NBCUniversal, began in May at locations across Manchester and the North West.
On Monday (August 3), filming took place next to Stockport’s Market Hall where a set depicting a 1830s market could be seen alongside crew and actors.

The set also included gallows, which were used historically for hangings, and mock signs advertising steam vessels to New York and Boston.
The Stop in Stockport blog shared images of the filming on twitter, while writing: “Stockport gets chosen for more filming.”
It’s not yet clear if any of the main cast were featured in the filming.
The series has been written by Executive Producers Lucy Montgomery and Rhys Thomas who will also appear in roles.

Rhys Thomas says: “I have always loved Oliver Twist but wasn’t so keen on Oliver himself – I preferred the company of Dodger, Fagin and the gang.
“I thought it would be fun to create a family show with Dodger at its heart and see how he came to be a master criminal in Victorian London.
“Working with the very best material as a springboard, it’s a total delight to expand Dickens’ rich world of characters and create a few of my own.
“To top it all, we have an incredible cast who are starring in the show. I can’t wait for families all over the world to see it!
Each episode of the ten-part series will feature a standalone adventure and is scheduled to air on CBBC and iPlayer next year.
