Former Liverpool star highlights transfer 'problem' with Raphael Varane point

It would be fair to say that this summer’s transfer window has been a reasonably quiet one for Liverpool – in terms of incomings, anyway.

The Reds have only made one addition so far, having officially signed centre-back Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig on July 1, after agreeing to pay his £36m release clause.

In terms of outgoings, Jurgen Klopp has allowed Harry Wilson, Taiwo Awoniyi and Marko Grujic to leave the club – receiving around £30million for the trio.

It is no secret that Liverpool could still make signings this summer, particularly in the midfield and forward areas.

Yet, concerns are starting to appear at the lack of Anfield incomings, and it is not just fans that are beginning to get frustrated, either.

Former left-back Jose Enrique has questioned his old side’s ability to replicate other top side’s summer activity.

“I am concerned with Liverpool’s lack of business in the transfer window so far,” said the Spaniard, writing for Empire of the Kop.

“The problem with the owners is that we’ve had to sell before buying players in the past – and that seems to still be the case.

“The only reason we have players like Alisson and van Dijk is because we sold Philippe Coutinho. Without that, we wouldn’t have these players and probably the titles they helped us win.

“I believe the signing of Konate was great and it was for the right money, but sometimes you have to go out and spend the big money on the big players.

“Before Alisson and van Dijk arrived, we were contenders to win titles and after they signed, we actually won one. So these kind of players are needed.

“Why can Manchester United go to Real Madrid and sign one of their best players in Raphael Varane and we can’t?”

United have not been afraid to spend big this summer. The Red Devils finally secured a deal for England winger Jadon Sancho, splashing £73million on the Borussia Dortmund man.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also made a statement by agreeing a deal to bring Real Madrid defender Varane to Old Trafford.

Alongside United, Chelsea are reportedly close to signing highly-rated Jules Kounde from Sevilla.

The most eye-opening transfer news, though, is that Manchester City are leading the race to sign Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish – with Pep Guardiola’s side lodging a £100m bid for the English playmaker on Friday.

Whilst it does appear that the Reds aren’t finished with their additions yet, the worry amongst many – Enrique included – is that their rivals are getting the jump on them by looking to spend big.

Liverpool could still end this window in positive fashion, but deals are going to have to happen sooner, rather than later.
